Cake Box Size Guide
Ready to get started? We've created this easy chart to show you what size of cake box you'll need for cakes ranging from 4" to 18". As you'll quickly see, there is an easy pattern to follow each time - go for a box at least 2" larger than your cake.
When it comes to selecting a cake box, you need to consider the size of the cake board you've used. Ideally, you want a board at least 2" wider than your cake, and a cake box the same size as your cake board.
The goal is to make sure the board fits snugly inside the box and doesn't have room to slip around. This will keep your cake stable and secure while transporting, which is the priority!
We have a wide range of cake boards available in lots of colours, styles and sizes - there really is something for every bake!
Why should I choose a cake box and board bigger than my cake?
You can learn more about how to choose the right size of cake board in this post. The rule of thumb is to use a cake board at least 2" wider than your cake
There are a few reasons for this! First, it offers more stability for your cake, and gives you a free edge to carry it. It also allows room for adding decoration to the board, which many professional cake artists choose to do to add further detail to their design!
However, a larger cake board also means you can successfully use a larger cake box - this is important as it ensures your cake doesn't touch the inside of the box, keeping your design undisturbed!
What type of cake box do I need?
For a fairly lightweight cake, you'll need a standard cake box, which is usually made of quality, food safe card. These come in a range of sizes, from about 6" all the way up to 20"+ width, and are usually approximately 6" deep.
Normally standard cake boxes are sold flat packed and easily fold and clip together without any need for gluing. They come either with a separate lid, or a lid attached. Some are window cake boxes and some come without a window.
If your cake is multi-tier or has a lot of decorations adding height to it, you should choose a Tall Cake Box.
For cupcakes, choose from a range of cupcake boxes. Popular sizes include Holds 4, Holds 6 and Holds 12, allowing you to present up to 12 cupcakes at once. However, you can find everything from boxes for 1 or 2 cupcakes, right up to Holds 24 for a large batch. Cupcake boxes also come in a wide range of colours and designs.

What cake box do I need for a heavy cake?
If you are transporting a heavier cake, you will need to consider something more robust. For example, if you have made a fruit cake, which is dense, this has a lot more weight to it than a light and airy sponge! So, when asking what size cake box you need for a heavy cake, you need to also consider the materials.
A corrugated cardboard cake box is a good choice for a heavy cake. This means the box has reinforcement built in, to cope with the extra weight. They are remarkably strong, giving you peace of mind when transporting your showstopper!
Do I need box extenders?
If you are making an extra tall cake with multiple tiers, you will need cake box extenders to ensure your cake fits!
Cake box extenders are specially designed inserts which fit inside your cake box. As the name suggests, they extend the height of the box itself, and then the original lid fits neatly on top. This is handy for things like wedding cakes and elaborate celebration cakes!
Be sure to plan ahead and pick up any extenders you need before it's time to parcel up your masterpiece.
Is a cake box with a window better than one without?
When it comes to windows, the choice is entirely yours! Many cake artists prefer a window cake box because it allows their cakey creation to be seen while transporting. It isn't hidden away behind all solid panels!
A window cake box is also great for displaying your cake on arrival at its destination. It's kept fresh inside the box, but people can still see the design!
Some window cake boxes have the window in the lid, so be sure to note whether it's in the lid or on the side of the box before purchasing, if you're looking to display your cake in it.
Are there biodegradable options?
Yes, there are options available for biodegradable cake boxes. These are popular with cake artists focusing on sustainability, and can be a great selling point when promoting your cakes.
Be sure to check each individual product listing before buying, as biodegradable boxes are less common.
