How to Make Helium Balloon Cupcake Toppers - Mother's Day Edition!

• Lynsey Macdonald

We're sure by now you'll have spotted helium balloon cupcake toppers popping up on your social media - and we bet you're as obsessed with them as we are! These on-trend treat decorations are so much easier to make than you might think. And we're here to show you how, with a little help from our super talented friend Vicki at @acakeonlife.

In this video, Vicki will show each step along the way to creating these toppers. So watch and enjoy, and if you need more info, keep reading this post...

What you'll need:

How to make Helium Balloon Cupcake Toppers

  1. Start by adding your chosen colouring to your modelling paste and roll out three small sausage shaped pieces which will form your M, U and M.
  2. Shape your piece of modelling paste into an M shape, making sure not to create too harsh a point in the middle - remember, helium balloons are puffy, with soft lines! Use your ball tool to create these soft indents.
  3. Next, take your dresden or scriber tool and begin to gently push small indents into the sides of the letter. These dents will help create the illusion of the balloon being filled with air!
  4. Roll out a super thin string of modelling paste to wrap around the entire edge of your letter to form the seam of the helium balloon.
  5. Repeat the action with your dresden or scriber tool again, redefining those indents now that you've added the seam.
  6. Letter one is done! Now, you'll move on to your other two letters and repeat the previous steps.
  7. Next, brush some of the fantastic Sweet Sticks Activator on to each of your shapes before dusting them with your chosen lustre dust - be sure to really buff it in. This is what will give you that iconic sheen! Use a fluffy dusting brush as opposed to a flat paint brush here.
  8. Now, take your sugarpaste and cut out a circle to fit the top of your cupcake. This is what will form the base of your topper.
  9. Place each letter on to a circle of sugarpaste (it should stick, but you can use a teeny bit of water or edible glue here if need be), and add a small, thin string of modelling paste to act as the balloon string.
  10. And now you're ready to pop your toppers on to your buttercream topped cupcakes, get them into your cupcake box and present them in style! Vicki also added a dash of co-ordinating sprinkles for a finishing flair!
