The best piping tips for a buttercream rose swirl
The secret to the perfect buttercream rose swirl is having the right piping tip on hand. It really is the difference between it going well and it going... not so well!
1M Open Star Piping Tip
Our recommendation is to use a 1M Open Star piping tip. This is a large nozzle which is perfect for creating rosettes, stars, shells and that all important swirl! It's a fairly common piping tip which you'll find most of your favourite brands sell. Choose from Wilton, Colour Mill, PME and more.
Sarah used the elegant gold 1M piping tip which is part of Wilton's Golden Decorating Tip Piping Set!
2D Drop Flower Piping Tip
If you don't have a 1M but you do have a 2D drop flower piping tip, this is a good alternative. It will create a slightly more ruffled look, though, so keep that in mind. Again, the 2D piping tip is available from Wilton, Colour Mill, PME and more.
Both of the above tips can be found in the Extra Large Decorating Tip Set, a great set for anyone looking to start building their collection.
What you'll need to pipe a rose swirl:
- A pre-made cupcake - see Sarah's recipe for the perfect vanilla cupcake here!
- Buttercream
- Food colouring of your choice (here Sarah uses Rose from Colour Mill)
- Your chosen piping tip

Instructions:
- Add a few drops of your colouring to your buttercream and mix thoroughly.
- Put the piping tip in your piping bag and fill with buttercream
- Hold your piping bag at a 90 degree angle over your cupcake and pipe a swirl. Start in the middle and slowly work your way around.
It sounds too good to be true, but it really is as simple as that! You can achieve the perfect rose swirl on your cupcakes in just three steps.
Practice makes perfect, right? It's a great excuse to whip up a few extra cupcakes! Test out different colours, add a subtle lustre dust or eye-catching sprinkle - have fun with it!

How to fix a drooping buttercream rose
If you find that your rose swirl isn't holding its shape, the most likely culprit is your buttercream itself. When the consistency of your buttercream isn't stable, it makes it difficult for any piped designs to stay put.
If the texture of the buttercream is too runny, you can fix this by adding a little bit more icing sugar at a time and mixing until you get your desired consistency. Easy-peasy!
Alternatively, it could be the temperature of the room. If it's a warm day and your buttercream is beginning to sag, pop either your bowl of buttercream or your piped cupcakes into the fridge to firm up.
