Are fondant cutters the same as cookie cutters?

Fondant and cookie cutters are similar as they cut shapes but are designed slightly differently. As fondant is rolled thinner and is more delicate, fondant cutters are often smaller and more delicate. They also may have more intricate designs to create fine detail like embossing features to add texture. Cookie cutters, however, are typically sturdier, so they can handle thicker dough. They also tend to have simpler shapes.

Can you use cookie cutters for fondant?

Yes, you can use cookie cutters on fondant to create a certain shape. However, using fondant icing cutters on cookie dough might not be as effective as intricate details might be lost with the thicker dough.

What are the different types of fondant cutters?

Fondant cutters come in many types, shapes, and sizes to help create intricate designs and shapes for decorating cakes, cupcakes and other baked treats. Here are some of the most common:

  • Plunger Cutters: These cutters have a spring-loaded mechanism which you push that simultaneously helps cut out shapes and imprint detail. These are popular for flowers, leaves and other intricate designs, as they can emboss veins or petal lines on leaves and flowers.
  • Embossing cutters: These cutters include designs that also imprint patterns into the fondant as they cut, creating textures like lace, polka dots or intricate borders.
  • Outline cutter: These provide a basic outline without additional embossing or detail. These cutters are similar to cookie cutters but might be smaller and more intricate. They come in various shapes and sizes, like stars, hearts and circles.
  • Number and alphabet cutters for fondant icing: Fondant letter and number cutters are designed to cut out letters and numbers, perfect for personalising cakes with names, messages or dates.
  • Patchwork cutters: These are very detailed cutters often used to create larger scenes or intricate designs such as figurines, silhouettes and animals.
  • Ribbon or strip cutters: These cutters have wheels that roll along the fondant to create borders, strips or ribbons. Some have interchangeable wheels for different designs, like zigzags or scallops.
