There are few cake decorating essentials you will use as often as piping bags! Whether you’re icing some cupcakes or creating a beautifully detailed Lambeth cake, piping bags are a must-have in any baker’s kitchen.

How to use a piping bag correctly

Piping bags are easy to master and can elevate your baking and decorating skills. Here are our top tips on using a piping bag correctly.

Step 1: Choose your piping bag. Then, choose your nozzle to create your desired design. Use a coupler if you want to change nozzles without emptying the bag.

Step 2: Insert your piping tip or coupler

Cut the tip off the bag, if disposable, and insert your piping tip or coupler into the bag. Ensure a snug fit so it does not slide out when you apply pressure.

Step 3: Fill the piping bag

Roll the bag to create a cuff, scoop your icing or batter into the bag with a spatula. Fill between halfway and two-thirds full and twist the top of the bag to seal it.

Step 4: Hold and squeeze

Grip the twisted top firmly with your dominant hand and use the other hand to guide the tip. Squeeze from the top, not the middle, for an even flow.

Does the nozzle go inside the piping bag?

Yes, if you are using a piping nozzle alone, it goes inside the piping bag. If you are using a piping bag coupler, one part of the coupler will go inside the bag, while the nozzle will attach to the other part, which is then attached to the outside of the bag.

Tips for piping success

  • If using buttercream, pre-cool it to prevent it from melting in your hands.
  • Smooth out your icing or batter to avoid bubbles and prevent uneven designs.
  • Rest as needed if your hands get tired to maintain control.
  • How many times can you reuse a piping bag?

Is a piping bag reusable?

The reusability of piping bags depends on the durability of the material, so we’ve created this handy guide.

  • Cloth piping bags: Made from nylon or canvas, they are designed for long-term use and can last hundreds of uses. Wash thoroughly with warm, soapy water to remove all grease and residue. Allow to dry completely before storage to prevent mould.
  • Silicone-like piping bags: Reusable icing piping bags that are highly durable and last for hundreds of uses if cleaned properly. Hand wash or place in the dishwasher if dishwasher-safe.
  • Plastic disposable icing piping bags: One-use items. Still, if they aren't damaged or you've managed to wash the grease away with warm, soapy water, there's no reason why you can't reuse them a few more times. Always check for weak spots or tears before reusing.

Can I use a Ziploc bag as a piping bag?

Yes, you can use a Ziploc bag as a makeshift piping bag! It's a convenient and inexpensive solution for quick projects, casual bakers or emergencies when you don't have a proper piping bag! However, Ziploc bags may not be as strong as traditional piping bags and can burst under heavy pressure. We recommend always having spare purpose-built piping bags if you regularly decorate or fill cakes and bakes to avoid using a makeshift method.

What is the best type of piping bag for thick creams and pastry?

For thicker creams and mixtures like choux pastry, you’ll want a heavy-duty piping bag to ensure it doesn’t burst under the pressure.

The PME Premium Icing Bag has welded seams. Stronger and more hygienic than traditional stitched seams, it’s ideal for heavy-duty piping.
