How many piping tips does a beginner need?
When you’re first starting out, you can do a lot with a good-quality round, star and dropflower piping tip. But as time goes on, you’ll want to build your collection. Every shape of nozzle comes in a range of sizes to help you create everything from large swirls to tiny star or line details.
Our nozzles are sold individually, but we also sell piping tip sets which are built by your favourite brands to include everything you need to start piping successfully. A good beginner's set is invaluable.
Our collections include essential nozzles from Wilton, Colour Mill, PME, Ateco, LOYAL and more.
What do different piping nozzles do?
Our piping tips are available in a wide range of styles, helping you create a variety of piped designs. Before you get started on your project, it's important to know what style of nozzle you need. Here are a few of the most common piping tip shapes you may come across:
- A round piping nozzle is ideal for piping lines, dots, borders, lettering and more. The larger the nozzle, the wider your borders/larger your dots will be.
- An open star piping nozzle is perfect for creating stars, shells, swirls and more. Again, the larger the nozzle, the larger your swirl is going to be.
- A closed star piping nozzle can create shells, stars, swirls and basic flowers with deeper grooves.
- A dropflower nozzle is a great choice for floral designs (and is also handy for swirls and stars).
- A petal nozzle is what you need for roses and petals, ruffles and other floral detail
- A leaf nozzle is (as you may expect!) perfect for creating lifelike leaf shapes
- A basketweave nozzle is great for adding smooth and ribbed stripes and basketweave designs to your bakes
- And a multi-open nozzle is what you'll need for creating grass, hair or fur texture
Most piping tip shapes can be used to create borders, but the most commonly used nozzles for borders are star and round nozzles.
How can I easily switch between piping tips?
Want to change your piping tip? Couplers allow you to easily change the piping nozzle on your piping bag without having to empty the contents of your piping bag. They come in two parts, one which attaches to your piping tip and the other to your piping bag.

How can I stop my piping nozzles from rusting?
Most piping nozzles are made of stainless steel. Make sure you wash them in hot water, and, most importantly, dry them thoroughly before putting them away. Storing them damp is usually what causes rust to form.
We also sell piping tip cleaning brushes to help you ensure your nozzles are extra clean, and keep your icing flowing freely through.
