How To Make Easy Cakesicles!

• Lynsey Macdonald

If you have a special occasion coming up and you're looking to make something a little different, cakesicles are a great option! These sweet treats are always a crowd pleaser. Because who doesn't love chocolate + cake?!

Not only are they a trendy, easy to personalise choice, but they are great for using up leftover sponge. There's no such thing as too much cupcake mix when you have the other makings of cakesicles in your kitchen cupboard!

So, we're here with the help of the amazing Judit (@yoras.cakes) to share with you what you need to make them and how to do it!

What you need:

  • A cakesicle mould
  • Candy Melts or Chocolate Melts
  • Oil Based Colouring (shade is up to you!)
  • Sponge Cake
  • Buttercream
  • Cakesicle sticks
  • Cakesicle boxes
  • And, if desired....
  • Sprinkles/other edible decorations
  • A piping bag for drizzling

Instructions:

  1. Slowly melt your chocolate or candy melts until smooth.
  2. Add your colouring of choice - here, Judit used the beautiful Peach shade from Colour Mill's Oil Based collection (oil based colours work best with candy/chocolate!).
  3. Pour some of your melted candy into your mould. Ensure it covers the bottom and gently tilt around until the mixture has evenly coated all the sides.
  4. Slot your cakesicle stick into the gap at the base of the mould and add more melted candy - move it around until the stick is fully surrounded. This will make sure your cakesicles are firmly attached to the sticks!
  5. Take your sponge cake and mix with buttercream until you form a firm mixture that holds together.
  6. Spoon the cake mix into your mould, filling it right to the top and pressing it in until smooth.
  7. Cover the back with an even layer of your remaining melted candy. Slowly tilt the mould again to achieve even coverage and give it a gentle tap on the work surface to help the candy settle into place.
  8. Pop into the fridge and leave until the candy has completely set.
  9. When you remove your cakesicles from the fridge, you should be able to easily pull back the silicone mould and the treat will pop out. Simply push up on the end of the stick to free it.
  10. Trim any excess candy from the back with a sharp knife (safety first, keep out of reach of small children!).
  11. Now it's time to decorate your cakesicles! You can choose to leave them plain or go all out. Judit added a touch of pink to her melted candy to create a complimentary colour, and drizzled it on using a piping bag! While the candy is still wet, add any decorations like sprinkles to ensure they stick.
  12. And finally, the perfect packaging will take things to the next level! For these pretty pastel cakesicles, our pastel green cakesicle boxes from Simply Making were the perfect choice! With a window to show off your design and a slot for the stick, it's such an easy way to turn your treats into a beautiful gift!

So there you have it! Easy cakesicles, perfectly packaged to make a beautiful gift! If you try out this tutorial, we'd love to hear how you get on! Leave us a comment, or share your photos on social media and tag us.
