• Lynsey Macdonald

One novelty design that will always be in style is a princess cake! Whether it's inspired by a book, a Disney film or simply channeling some magical vibes, this cute theme can be created in so many different styles. This is the second instalment of our "iconic cake themes" series, and we hope this is one you come back to again and again for birthdays, baby showers and more.

We turned to one of our talented cake artist friends to help us with this project! The amazing Vicki from @acakeonlife joined us once again to create a beautiful tiara design cake, and matching cupcakes, fit for a queen!

How to make your tiara design princess cake - and matching cupcakes!

  1. Add your lemon food colouring to your modelling paste and knead thoroughly before rolling it out.
  2. Press the large tiara cutter down firmly into the paste and gently remove the excess from around the sides.
  3. While the cutter is still firmly in the paste, used your dresden tool to run along the edges of the cut out shapes, and then use it (or your needle tool) to push the paste out.
  4. Once your cut outs are complete, gently remove the cutter from the paste - it should pull away easily.
  5. Now, repeat the process with more lemon coloured paste and your small tiara cutter. These are the perfect size for matching cupcakes!
  6. Next, place your small tiaras on a non-stick rolling pin to help form the curved shape. Do the same with the large tiara - Vicki used a 5" cake dummy for this part, but you can experiment with different round edged, food-safe items if you don't have a dummy to hand.
  7. While your tiaras are forming their shape, take your metallic edible paint and your brush, and add on that all important colouring. The Sweet Sticks paints have a beautiful shine, making for an eye-catching finish! (Vicki placed some parchment paper/baking paper around the cake dummy for this part, to avoid staining it with paint.)
  8. Remove the tiara from the dummy/rolling pin and paint the back, ensuring it is fully covered for a perfect 360 degree shine!
  9. Cut out a small circle of baby pink sugarpaste to form a base for the tiara cupcake toppers.
  10. Finish off by placing your large tiara on top of the princess cake and the small tiaras on top of the cupcakes. The cupcake toppers will stick to your buttercream or frosting, but you can add a little edible glue to attach the larger cake topper if need be!

Et voila! Vicki (@acakeonlife), we can't thank you enough for creating this fantastic tutorial for us. It's such a beautiful way to decorate a princess cake. And we always love hearing your tips, tricks and favourite tools!
