Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Are reusable piping bags or disposable piping bags best?
Whether reusable or disposable piping bags are the better choice all depends on the project and your own circumstances. Disposable piping bags are very hygience but less environmentally friendly. Reusable options can be hard to keep clean but are kinder to the envionment.
To learn more about the pros and cons, check out our post: Reusable vs. Disposable Piping Bags.
How do I prevent my piping bag from blowing out?
To prevent the seams on your piping bag from blowing out, be sure not to overfill it. Only fill your piping bag around half or two thirds of the way, to avoid putting too much pressure on it.
If this isn’t the culprit, it may be that you’ve snipped too much off the end, allowing the piping tip to slip through and burst the seam. Make sure you only cut off a tiny amount, enough for the very end of your piping tip to stick through.
What are the best piping bags for buttercream vs. royal icing?
A larger, more heavy duty piping bag (14” +) is ideal for working with buttercream. The Wilton Featherweight range is a good option. Whereas for royal icing, a thinner, disposable option in a smaller size (9” or 10”), like the Colour Mill piping bag, gives you more control over your piping.

How do I clean my reusable piping bags?
Check the product description of the individual bag you have bought. Some specify that they are dishwasher safe, which is always handy! If it is not, turn them inside out, remove any significant leftover frosting, and wash thoroughly with hot water and dish soap. Leave it to air-dry thoroughly.
How do I use a coupler with my piping bag?
A coupler comes in two parts - the base and the ring. Place the base INSIDE your piping bag and snip the end off the bag. Then, attach your chosen piping tip and secure it with the ring on the OUTSIDE. This allows you to easily switch piping nozzles while using the same bag of buttercream, ideal for designs like Lambeth cakes!
