Remember, Holly has a long list of tutorial ideas to work through, but is always delighted to take suggestions from you - so, if there's a bake you're hoping to see appear on our blog, don't hesitate to drop us a DM (including the words "Bake with Us"!).

Recipe for the gingerbread dough

If you have your own beloved gingerbread recipe, use it! If not, we are obsessed with the handy gingerbread mix from our friends at FunCakes. It's quick, easy and delicious - the perfect combo!

All you need to add to the mix is 1 egg, 60g of butter and 60ml of water. Mix into a dough, beat it together for 5mins and then pop in the fridge for an hour to chill.

How to decorate gingerbread cupcakes for Christmas!

Start with pre-made gingerbread dough and pre-made cupcakes.

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 180C (fan 160C).

Step 2: Cut out your gingerbread men.
Take your chilled gingerbread dough out of the fridge and roll it out flat to a thickness of about 3mm. Use your gingerbread cutter to cut out the perfect shapes.

Step 3: Bake for approximately 12mins.
Line your baking tray with parchment paper/baking paper, and place your gingerbread shapes on top of it. Pop them in the preheated oven to bake for around 12 minutes.

Step 4: Colour your buttercream.
Add a splash of Colour Mill's Clay colouring to your white/cream buttercream and stir thoroughly - you'll only need a couple of drops to achieve a pretty, pale caramel shade, but build up a couple of drops at a time until you're happy.

Step 5: Pipe your buttercream.
Put your buttercream into a piping bag with a 1A tip (or other large round shape) and pipe onto your pre-baked cupcakes.

Step 6: Break up your gingerbread.
Break your gingerbread men into six pieces (we know, this bit feels harsh!) - we'll be using the head, two arms and two legs! (the other bit is great for snacking while you work, just saying...)

Step 7: Attach the gingerbread to the buttercream.
Place the head, arms and legs on the cupcake, pushing into the buttercream so it forms the body of the gingerbread character!

Step 8: Pipe on your detail.
Using a small round piping tip for fine lines (we used the Wilton #3), pipe on your detail. We used it to create eyes, a smiling mouth, buttons and a little frill around the buttercream outfit!

Step 9: Dust on a little silver lustre dust (optional!)
For a little added sparkle, use a white or silver lustre dust to give your gingerbread characters some festive flair!

Step 10: Store them safely in a cute cupcake box.
Transport your cupcakes safely and in style in one of our beautiful Simply Making cupcake boxes. We went for the matching gingerbread design, but there are lots of designs to choose from.
