Boho Flowers

Flowers are one of the most popular additions to a boho wedding cake. But fresh flowers can cause problems! They can contain pesticides (a big no-no!), and they cannot simply be inserted into or placed onto a cake without a lot of additional steps. Luckily, a floral design is achievable with the following items!

Edible Flowers

Our friends at Nurtured in Norfolk have a fantastic line of edible flowers, ready to place straight onto your cake. The range includes edible violas, pansies, roses, daisies and more - the dream for a boho wedding cake!

If you're adding edible flowers to a buttercream cake, simply press the petals lightly into the buttercream - they will stay put! If you're adding them to a cake covered in sugarpaste, a tiny bit of edible glue will help to secure them.

Dried Flowers

If you’re not concerned with the flowers being edible but you would like to add some pretty toppers with a nature vibe, why not go for a dried option! The gorgeous range of dried flowers from The Baked Studio is a great place to start.

Just remember, they are not classed as food-safe, which means a food-safe barrier must be added before applying them to your cake. We recommend wrapping the stems of the flowers before inserting them into your cake. Alternatively, Cake Pins are a quick and mess-free way of arranging floral decorations and keeping them fixed in place!

Wafer Paper Flowers

And finally, for some real floral flair, wafer paper flowers are a really fun and easy way to finish off your boho wedding cake. FunCakes has created a stunning range of wafer paper flowers, taking the hard work out of making them if you’re a beginner.

Peonies, Dahlias, Hydrangeas, Orchids - you name it, FunCakes has a wafer paper version of the flower you are looking for.

Fruit Decorations

Already adding florals? Fruit is the perfect accompaniment for a really colourful cake with all the natural vibes.

Dried Fruit

Dried fruit slices are a classic addition to a rustic wedding cake! They fit perfectly with a boho theme - they have the ability to feel traditional and contemporary, all at once. No easy feat!

Again, we recommend the fantastic Nurtured in Norfolk - they have a range of dried fruit slices just waiting to be placed on your cake! The collection includes dried Lemon, Lime, Orange and Grapefruit.

Fresh Fruit

Depending on the time of year, fresh fruit can also be a lovely addition to a boho wedding cake. Think berries of all kinds, adding pops of colour as well as flavour to your bake!

Do keep in mind, though, that fresh fruit can start to look soggy or dried out shortly after cutting, and the moisture it introduces can present issues for the structure of the cake. It will also reduce the shelf life of your cake, as it will have to be eaten quickly. But berries which haven’t been cut, placed on the cake board for decoration, are all good!

Boho Moulds and Stencils

Keen to do a bit more intricate decorating on your boho wedding cake? Moulds and stencils are your best friends.

Boho Cake Moulds

Cake decorating moulds are a great option for adding detail to your wedding cake tiers. Our friends at Karen Davies have a wide range of styles that fit nicely with the boho theme!

Our favourites are the Wild Meadow mould, for a whimsical, floral feel, the Rustic Basket Weave mould, for a classic basket effect, and the Plaited Borders mould for intricate border detail.

Rustic Cake Stencils

A cake stencil is another effective way to decorate a boho wedding cake! Choose a small stencil to create pretty border detail, or something larger to decorate an entire tier.

We have some beautiful options from cake pros, including Angela Morrison, to help you create stunning designs with ease.

Ribbons and Bows

Ribbons are a beautiful addition to any wedding cake design. And in the right colours, they can be the ideal finishing touch for a boho wedding cake.

Our food-safe ribbons from Simply Making are safe to apply directly to the cake! And these dainty PME bows are pre-made, making them a really quick way to add some whimsy to your design.

Naked Wedding Cake

A naked or semi-naked wedding cake is a classic choice if you’re going for boho vibes. This is a low-key style, with very little frosting on the outside. It’s an understated look and one that allows other decorations like flowers or fruit to shine.

Grab your scraper and buttercream and create a thin coating (just a little more than a crumb coat!) to achieve this look.

Neutral or Rustic Food Colourings

A boho cake can come in many different colours. But a popular choice is to stick to neutral, earthy tones and soft hints of green. Thankfully, we have plenty of those for you to choose from.

Why not shop Colour Mill’s stunning collection of oil-blend colourings for your chocolate and buttercream? Or grab a beautiful lustre dust to add warm tones to your sugarpaste. Edible paints are also perfect for painting boho designs onto your cakes!

Simple Boho Sprinkles

When it comes to a boho wedding, keeping the sprinkles simple is the key to success. We love simple white nonpareils and gold pearls!

A dash of gold or rose gold lustre dust can complement these perfectly, giving your boho bake an ethereal glow!

DIY Boho Wedding Cake FAQs

How do flower picks work?

Push the pointed end of the flower pick (or posy pick) into your cake, with the opening facing out. That way, you can insert your dried flowers or other toppers into your cake without the stems touching the cake itself. It’s an important food safety step!

What do edible flowers taste like?

Each type of edible flower has a slightly different taste - some are sweet, some more fragrant, and others more peppery. However, when the petals are dried, their flavour is much milder and more subtle. So, our dried edible flowers from Nurtured in Norfolk won't alter the taste of your bakes!
