How to make an Adorable Topper for a Dinosaur Cake!

• Lynsey Macdonald

Not much beats a dinosaur cake when it comes to popular kids party themes! Whether you're going for super cute vibes or something closer to Jurassic Park, we love how creative our community gets with these bakes. So, with that in mind, we decided it was a dino-mite choice for tutorial number four in our "iconic cake themes" series!

It goes without saying that we couldn't bring you these tutorials without our talented gang of cake pros! Once again we had the wonderful Vicki from @acakeonlife take on this challenge, and she created the most adorable dinosaur cake topper we ever did see!

Want to see how Vicki did it? We know some people prefer to watch and learn over a step by step guide. If that's you, you can watch our YouTube video here! But keep reading for your shopping list and all instructions.

Got your own dino design in mind? That's great! Go forth and shop all of our dinosaur themed products now for your essential supplies.

How to make your dinosaur cake topper...

  1. Start off with a circle of white modelling paste, carefully cutting around the edge with your knife tool or a pair of sugarcraft scissors to create a jagged "cracked egg" edge.
  2. Take your dresden tool and score shallow indents across the white to continue the cracked effect.
  3. Form tiny balls of modelling paste (coloured with Colour Mill Sand) and use your ball tool to create indents on the egg shell to push them into. This adds colour and detail to the shell.
  4. Place a thin strip of greaseproof paper across the Wilton Flower Shaping bowl before placing your egg shell into it to form the rounded shape. Vicki advises leaving this overnight to fully dry.
  5. Use approximately 6g of modelling paste coloured with Colour Mill Green and roll out to form the dinosaur's tail. Once you're happy with the shape, press this into the shell, attaching with a little edible glue. Note: Vicki built the whole dinosaur with the shell still in the flower shaping bowl, for added stability.
  6. Next, use approximately 25g of green modelling paste to form the body!
  7. Take a thin strip of modelling paste, coloured with Colour Mill Sand, and roll it out flat, working it into the same shape as the body. Use your dresden tool to create shallow lines across it. Carefully place on to the front to create the cute contrasting tummy colour!
  8. Attach the body to the tail in the shell, again with some edible glue for security, and the press a toothpick/cocktail stick down into the body, sticking out at the top. This will make attaching the head easier.
  9. For the head, use around 20g of green modelling paste. Roll and smooth into shape and then use your ball tool to create two indents for the eyes, two smaller holes for nostrils, and a smiley line for the mouth.
  10. Use two small balls of white modelling paste for the eyes, and add small circles of THE SUGARPASTE's black modelling paste (you can colour some of your white modelling paste with black if you'd rather) and even smaller circles of white for detail.
  11. Attach the head to the body using the cocktail stick - this will keep it securely together.
  12. Next, make the dinosaur's arms! For each, you'll use about 2g of modelling paste. Vicki says "Use a little larger than a pea sized amount. Start off with two small balls of the same size - this will help to ensure that your arms are the same size.". Use your dresden tool again to create the finger shapes.
  13. Attach the arms to the body (again, you can use a little edible glue here if you need to!).
  14. Finally, create some added detail with little white spikes on the tail and sand coloured spots on the dinosaur.
  15. Attach to the top of your cake (surrounded by a generous helping of FunCakes' Jungle Joy sprinkles) and you're done!

Ta-da! One adorable dinosaur cake topper ready to be the hit of the party! Huge thanks to the amazing Vicki (@acakeonlife) for bringing us yet another amazing tutorial. This super cute dino is sure to brighten up so many birthday bakes in our cakey community from now on!
