Meet the Web Team at The Cake Decorating Company
• Lynsey Macdonald
A lot goes in to the management of an online store - especially one with as many products as we have on The Cake Decorating Company website! The technical side of the business is no walk in the park, with lots of plates to juggle and systems to keep on top of. Which is why we couldn't be more thankful for our fantastic web team. So, we thought it was time for you to meet them!
Without the web team, there simply would be no Cake Dec! They are who you have to thank for new products appearing on a weekly basis, discount codes and offers popping up, checkout flowing seamlessly and every behind the scenes technical process being taken care of. Everything from orders reaching our warehouse to confirmation emails reaching your inbox is down to this group.
If you've read our previous meet the team posts, you'll know that each of our departments has a small but mighty team - the web team is no different! Handling everything tech based, this is the team who is responsible for ensuring our websites and order systems are all running smoothly, listing products for sale, managing stock, merchandising and so. much. more... Seriously - without this gang we don't know where we'd be!
So, we sat down with Ash W, Ash K and Lynsey to ask them our quick fire questions about their roles, their teammates and, of course, their favourite cakes! And yes, fun fact... three of our four web team members really do have the same name!

Ash W (Head of Technology)
How long have you worked at The Cake Decorating Company?
I have been working at the company for 7 years now! I originally joined as a Copywriter back in 2018 but I now head up the Technology/Web department and look after all of our systems and anything else tech-related!
What’s your favourite part of the job and why?
The nature of my role means I get to support every department of the business, whether it's fixing something that isn't working quite right, or implementing and building something brand new. I love being able to solve problems and bring ideas to life!
If you had to work in any other department, what would it be and why?
I think it would have to be Design. I work with a lot of data and 'techy bits and bobs' so it would be really fun to do something more visual and creative!
Who is most likely to come up with an innovative new process to streamline their work?
I would say Ash K - I love bouncing ideas off of her when I'm figuring out a new process and she always manages to think outside the box!
Who usually has the busiest weekend?
Oh that's a hard question! It varies, I think! For example, Lynsey recently headed up to Aviemore to spend the weekend enjoying some beautiful forest walks and mountain air (not jealous at all!) .
And finally… what’s your favourite type of cake/flavour of cake?
Definitely cheesecake! Preferably a salted caramel or Biscoff flavour!

Ash K (Data Administrator)
How long have you worked at The Cake Decorating Company?
5 years!
What’s your favourite part of the job and why?
I love seeing all the new cakey supplies coming in and seeing how creative bakers can be!
If you had to work in any other department, what would it be and why?
I can honestly say I love being part of the web team, so it’s tough to pick another department. But if I had to, I’d probably go with design. I really enjoy being creative, so having the chance to tap into that side of things a bit more would be a lot of fun.
Who is most likely to check their emails outside of working hours?
We all keep an eye on emails, but I think Ash W tops the chart for this one.
Who is most likely to break the ice in a meeting?
Definitely Lynsey – thank you on behalf of all of us!
And finally… what’s your favourite type of cake/flavour of cake?
I’m actually not a huge cakey fan, but if I had to choose it would probably be coffee and walnut.

Lynsey (Digital Copywriter)
How long have you worked at The Cake Decorating Company?
It'll be four years in August since I joined the business, which is hard to believe. It's gone by so fast!
What’s your favourite part of the job and why?
Honestly, I just love that I get to spend my days writing about something as lovely as cake. Having worked freelance in the past, across a wide range of businesses, it’s a joy to work in an industry that is so creative, colourful and focused on making people happy. From birthdays to weddings, the products we sell are linked to so many “best days”, which means the content we create is too. What could be nicer than that?!
Another perk is the people I work with! Everyone is so talented and even though I work fully remotely, I've never felt like less of a team member with this gang!
I also love getting to walk round the competition entries at Cake International – it might only be one weekend a year but it is so inspiring.
If you had to work in any other department, what would it be and why?
I'm actually already a member of two teams – marketing and web – and I really enjoy both parts of my job. So, this is a tricky one! If I had to pick, then maybe some sort of wholesale role? I'm a people person and love to chat, so developing ongoing relationships with those customers must be nice!
Who is most likely to kickstart an interesting conversation?
Ooh I'd say Ash W - we take it in turns to lead the morning meetings and ask the team something fun/something to get us thinking and Ash always has good ideas!
Who is most likely to offer to lend a hand when you're busy?
I'm going to say Ash K for this one, though honestly, everyone is so good at supporting the rest of the team. I know there have been plenty times in the past though when Ash K has known I'm super busy and has just sorted something before I've even had to add it to my to do list - which I really appreciate!
And finally… what’s your favourite type of cake/flavour of cake?
I would have to say either a really nice Victoria Sponge (a classic!) or a bit of cheesecake (fruit or toffee/salted caramel topping). Controversially, while I love chocolate, I’m not a huge fan of chocolate sponge, so anything with a vanilla sponge base is usually a hit with me.
Thank you so much for taking the time to chat to us everyone, we know you're all super busy! We so appreciate everything you do for the business. And, as always, a shout out has to go to our queen of design, Chloe, for designing yet another set of adorable avatars for our team members!
